'Summertime'은 조지 거슈윈(George Gershwin)이 작곡한 'Porgy and Bess'에 나오는 아리아로, 이를 재즈나 뮤지컬 레퍼토리로 잘 못알고 있는 이들이 많다.
1935년에 초연된 오페라 'Porgy and Bess'는 사우스 캐롤라이나의 작은 섬을 배경으로 해서, 거기 사는 흑인들의 삶과 애환을 그린다. '포기'는 앉은뱅이 거지이다. 베스는 '크라운'이라는 사람의 정부였으나 나중 포기를 사랑하게 되어 함께 살아간다. 포기는 베스를 모욕한 '크라운'을 살해하고 감옥에 가게 된다. 그 사이 베스는 마약상인 '포스팅 라이프'라는 남자의 유혹에 넘어가 뉴욕으로 간다. 감옥에서 출소한 포기는 염소가 끄는 마차를 타고 사랑하는 베스를 찾아 뉴욕으로 떠나게 되는데.....
'Summertime'은 오페라 시작과 함께 젊은 '클라라'가 자신의 아기를 안고 나와 먹고 살 만한 여름이 되었으니 걱정 말라며, 아기를 어르면서 부르는 노래이다.
